For the sixth year, Nusenda Credit Union is inviting metro area high-school students to take its no-cost, Financial Services Career Exploration course, which offers dual-credit hours at their high school and at Central New Mexico Community College, all while obtaining job skills and real-world experience from industry professionals.
Nusenda’s Financial Services Career Exploration course not only helps students to learn about career pathways in the financial service industry, it also helps them gain personal finance skills to manage their finances - such as creating a budget, making a savings plan, managing credit, and more. Once students complete the course, they are eligible to apply for a paid internship with Nusenda Credit Union and receive compensation of more than $9 per hour, along with additional high school and college credit.
“At Nusenda Credit Union, we strive to go above and beyond to ensure that all New Mexicans receive a comprehensive financial education,” said Nusenda Chief Community Engagement Officer Robin Brulé. “As one of the most extensive programs of its kind, this award-winning financial capabilities program is designed to teach students the importance of managing finances while giving them the opportunity to gain on-the-job training and earn competitive hourly pay.”
To date, 220 students have taken the Financial Services Career Exploration course. Of those, 80 have become paid Nusenda interns, and 23 obtained positions with Nusenda following the internship.
Eduardo Hernandez, a former intern who is now a teller at Nusenda’s South Valley branch, said the program helped him make sure that the world of business and finance was where he wanted to be.
“The class and the internship really pushed me to continue pursuing my goal within finance,” he said.“The internship was unique because it wasn’t how I would imagine it.
“It was real-world experience with real-world interactions – Nusenda is a great place to work not only because of the way they treat us as employees but how they treat members and the community.”
Nusenda Credit Union employees recently voted the credit union as the No. 1 medium-sized workplace in a Top Workplaces survey; and for the second year, the credit union was named a gold-tier, Family-Friendly Workplace for its workplace and employment policies and benefits. The credit union has also been named one of Albuquerque’s Healthiest Employers by Albuquerque Business First.
