Herb Wegner Memorial Award celebrates innovation and measurable impact on credit union movement nationwide
The National Credit Union Foundation (NCUF) on Oct. 8 announced it would bestow its highest honor on the Nusenda Foundation for its innovative, creative, and risk-taking work and leadership.
The Herb Wegner Memorial Awards are named in honor of the late Credit Union National Association CEO Herb Wegner, whose dedication, innovative ideas, and deeds revolutionized the way credit unions serve their communities. The Nusenda Foundation was named Outstanding Organization; Nusenda Foundation leadership will receive the award March 11 in Washington, D.C.
“In our fast-paced world, it’s so important to take the time to celebrate those in our movement who have gone above and beyond to embody the credit union difference,”said NCUF Executive Director Gigi Hyland. “These awardees truly embody dedication to promoting the credit union philosophy. They have created innovative concepts, and provided leadership that has had significant, lasting, and measurable impact on the credit union movement. We cannot wait to celebrate and honor them at the 2019 Herb Wegner Memorial Awards.”
“The Nusenda Foundation is dedicated to the core values that make credit unions an asset in their communities, but none of this success would be attainable without strong community partnerships that help identify the challenges our diverse and unique population face,” said Nusenda Foundation Executive Director Robin Brulé. “By removing barriers to education, healthcare, and economic success, these strategically focused collaborations reap higher benefits than if we all worked alone.
“We are honored to receive recognition in the name of Herb Wegner, who worked so tirelessly to improve people’s financial lives through credit unions,” she added. “We are up to the task – and are looking forward to helping thousands more New Mexicans as we continue to grow our diverse program portfolio aimed at supporting statewide goals for entrepreneurship, economic development, financial education, and family financial mobility.”
The Nusenda Foundation is being recognized not only for being the pioneer in micro-lending in New Mexico through its award-winning Co-op Capital program, but also for widening access points to capital statewide, its economic empowerment efforts, its member engagement/contribution programs, its volunteer/philanthropic efforts of both the foundation and the credit union, and its founding membership in City Alive and Innovate ABQ.
Bernalillo County’s Economic Development Department, The Grants Collective, Partnership for Community Action, the University of New Mexico Foundation, and Wells Fargo submitted letters of support on the Nusenda Foundation’s behalf for this award.
