Partnership with Running Start for Careers Offers Students Career Exploration Opportunities

Albuquerque, N.M., September 1, 2016 – Nusenda Credit Union, the largest credit union in New Mexico with more than 165,000 member-owners, is announcing a call for fall enrollment for students to take its Financial Services Career Exploration course. Nusenda Credit Union developed the Financial Services Career Exploration course in partnership with the Running Start for Careers program, with curriculum focused on career-based skills such as resume writing, mock interviews and professional skills development.  The course also offers an opportunity to apply for a paid, credit-earning internship with the credit union.

Shana Runck, assistant vice president of community relations and financial capability at Nusenda Credit Union, has developed the Financial Services Career Exploration course which began in the fall 2013 semester.

“At Nusenda Credit Union, we strive to go above and beyond to ensure that all New Mexicans receive a comprehensive financial education,” said Runck.  “As one of the most extensive programs of its kind, this career development program is designed to teach high school students the importance of developing professional skills that aren’t typically taught in classrooms, but which are essential in terms of finding and growing their post-classroom careers.”

Created by Mayor Richard J. Berry, the Running Start for Careers program is available at no cost to high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors.  Through participation in the program, students can earn dual-credit hours at their high school and at the Central New Mexico Community College (CNM) while obtaining job skills and real world experience from industry experts.  The Financial Services Career Exploration course helps students to transition their school experience into lifelong professional skills.

Once students complete the course, they are also eligible to apply for a paid internship with Nusenda Credit Union and receive a compensation of more than $9 per hour, along with additional high school and college credit.  Internships are available throughout the credit union including departments such as service delivery, human resources, and information services.

The Financial Services Career Exploration course will take place between September 19 and December 11 at the Nusenda Credit Union Training Center located at 4100 Pan American Freeway NE in Albuquerque.  The deadline to sign up for the course is September 18.

Interested students can enroll in the class by going online to www.cnm.edu/dualcredit  and registering for the class code FIN 1005 CRN 74893.  For more information on Nusenda Credit Union and its financial education resources and programs, please visit http://www.nusendafoundation.org.
