Educator Resources
Financial knowledge and capability are key factors in the economic success of New Mexicans, both now and for generations to come. We are uniquely dedicated to this cause, creating the state’s first Common Core State Standards-aligned financial capability curriculum for teachers and students in New Mexico. Our groundbreaking curriculum goes beyond basic financial knowledge (literacy) by providing participants with tools needed to make educated financial choices and positively influence financial behavior (capability).
Our financial capability curriculum ensures that participants gain the financial knowledge and skills needed to create financial plans and effectively manage their money. By becoming knowledgeable financial consumers, participants maximize their opportunities in education and the workforce.
Financial literacy curriculum and additional resources are available at no charge for educators, members, and the general public.
This summer, high-school sophomores, juniors, and seniors can take a free personal finance course that will not only help them gain sound financial skills and knowledge, but will also earn elective credits toward their education.
In partnership with Albuquerque Public Schools, Bernalillo Public Schools, and Santa Fe Public Schools, Nusenda Credit Union is hosting the course at:
- Albuquerque High School from June 4 – 23
- Bernalillo High School in Bernalillo from June 4 -29
- Capital High School in Santa Fe June 4 – 29
- Eldorado High School from June 25 – July 16
- Santa Fe High School in Santa Fe June 4 - 29
“As one of the most extensive programs of its kind, this curriculum is designed to teach students the importance of managing finances, while giving them the opportunity to understand how making smart money choices can positively impact their lives – now and in the future,” said Shana Runck, Nusenda’s Assistant Vice President of Community Relations and Financial Capability. “This educational program is just one of the many ways that we work toward making the communities in which we serve better places to live, work, and play.”
Interested APS students can sign up for the course through their school counselors now through May 24; additionally, they can sign up at the Bruce and Alice King Educational Complex, 6400 Uptown Blvd. For more information, visit APS 2018 Summer Programs.
Bernalillo High School students can contact Principal Larry Davis at 867-2388or [email protected] to register. For those interested in the course who go to Santa Fe-area schools, contact Dr. James D. Luján, Associate Superintendent for Teaching and Learning, at [email protected].
Enrolled students receive a comprehensive student guide/workbook at no charge, and those who successfully complete the course will receive half of an elective credit towards their graduation goals.
The course uses a Common-Core aligned curriculum, created by Nusenda that goes beyond basic financial knowledge by providing students with the tools needed to make educated financial choices, and positively influence financial behavior. It is established from an award-winning and research-based curriculum by the Annie E. Casey Foundation. Subjects include how to create financial plans, effectively manage money, and become knowledgeable financial consumers in education and in the workforce.
